Gorilla Cardiff Bay Expansion

Posted on: 1st Jan 2018

Megahertz Ltd, the trusted partner for systems integration with years of experience in delivering cost effective, imaginative designs and solutions for fixed and mobile applications, today announced that it has completed a relocation and expansion project for post-production house, Gorilla at the Gloworks creative industries building, Cardiff Bay, Wales.

It's the third time that Gorilla has contracted Megahertz for systems integration services, having commissioned them to build its original post production facilities in 2006. In 2010, the SI also aided Gorilla's transition to HD and supplied a new mobile production vehicle.

For the Media Hub expansion, Megahertz completed a complex facility relocation that had to be carefully planned in order to meet critical time frames.

"There was a small window during the Christmas break, when there were no live broadcasts scheduled, in which the team had to move and re-install existing kit from our old Penarth Road facility - as well as integrate it with our new systems," explained Rhodri James, Technical Director at Gorilla. "It was tight, but our previous experience with Megahertz gave us the confidence to press on. And it paid off."

Megahertz conducted all of the pre-fabrication and cable testing at its Ely-based factory to best prepare for the move, which involved extensive equipment repurposing, including the transfer of an entire audio rack as one unit.

New infrastructure equipment was provided including racks, power management, jackfields and monitoring equipment and Megahertz also installed a new SAM Vega router that integrates with Gorilla's existing SAM Kahuna mixer.

"We've relied on Megahertz to deliver quality design and system integration services for over a decade now. They always live up to expectations, overcome challenges with logic and experience, and they deliver on time", continued James." For anyone relocating, upgrading or building a new facility, I'd highly recommend they speak to Megahertz."

The systems integrator's role in the expansion project also entailed the build of a new TV studio and the refurbishment and upgrade of Gorilla's existing studio and gallery which will extend the life of these facilities for another ten years.

Technical furniture for a new production control room was also delivered, along with three wall boxes to allow the gallery to communicate with any of the studios. Megahertz also relocated Gorilla's 2.4m dish to the roof of the new building for satellite uplinks and downlinks for the provision of live event programming and the potential to connect to external OB units.
